Manos––Michael Crowley Article

In this particular article, “Some Experts Worry as a Germ-Phobic Trump Confronts a Growing Epidemic”, which happens to be Mr. Crowley’s latest, he talks about Trump and his rhetoric in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak.

His lead is a basic news lead that is direct, concise, and anecdotal. He refers to the President’s past when he was a ‘private citizen’ and how he reacted negatively then to President Obama’s acton with Ebola. He then uses this to tie in to Trump’s current attitude toward the spread of Coronavirus. Mr. Crowley doesn’t leave his voice out of his writing however, as he calls the tactics that Mr. Trump advocated for, “draconian”.

In his piece, Crowley shows that he likes the bulk of his sources to be from interviews as he questions people like Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo of Johns Hopkins, or Dr. Anthony S. Faucy of the National Institute of Allergy. Through this additive of fact to emotion, Mr. Crowley has a very clear writing style that directs the reader in the more sensible direction, while still giving the facts in a neutral manner.

He ends the story in a very common way, with a quote from Chinese president Xi. Not only is the quote broad enough to be at the bottom, but it does a great job of tying everything in–in this case, the coronavirus and politics.

The two most major things that I learned from Mr. Crowley here are one, you can always leave room for your tone and use the facts to highlight one particular side of the issue. And two, interviews are extremely important; obtaining a credible, scholarly, and well known source can immensely help drive a point home in the news.
