McNulty Story #3

For my third story, I want to write about the pit just recently shifted to putting roughly 1/3rd mushroom in all of their burgers. This is known as the blended burger and it leads to more sustainable eating along with less of a environmental impact. In a much broader scope than Wake Forest, Americans eat about 10 million burgers per year and replacing the burgers with 30% beef would be an excellent sustainability option. I was shocked to find this out about the burgers at Wake because I usually despise mushrooms, but it did not change my eating behavior with that popular food in dining halls on campus. I want to reach out to Dedee Johnston and she if she has any recommendations on who I can talk too / who came up with this idea.  I also think there would be great reactions in talking to students about this as I am not sure how many actually know about the blended burger. There is a lot of interesting information on the topic in terms of the burger having a lighter footprint.

McNulty Story Idea #2

For my second story idea, I want to write about how the California governor just signed a bill that will allow college athletes to hire agents and make money from endorsements. This is scheduled to go into effect in 2023 in California and is the first legal action that goes against the NCAA’s philosophy that student athletes should not earn any revenue from playing their respective sports. I believe this is timely because this topic has been highly contested recently and is relevant at a school like Wake Forest who is a D1 school in the ACC where sports are big. There are several male athletes in multiple of my classes who could be interesting sources. A senior in my fraternity is dating a player on the women’s soccer team which could help me be able to talk to some of the members of that team. Random male and female students could provide an interesting perspective along with ushers at sporting events. I am not sure if I will talk to any teachers though.

McNulty First Story Idea

For my first story, I want to write about the upcoming Last Lecture Series on the history of fraternity masculinity. These talks occur once a semester and Dr. Mir Yarfitz will be leading this one on Wednesday the 25th. As a member of a fraternity on campus, I have first hand seen how greek life has been scrutinized and has changed heavily over the years. Specifically at Wake Forest, fraternities have been getting in trouble constantly and have not always been looked at in the best light. I think I will provide a unique perspective on the talk from my experience of seeing my fraternity do bad things and unbelievable things in a way that not of people can do. This is a controversial topic, and I am curious to see if Dr. Mir Yarfitz talks about how he perceives fraternities today or if he just talks about their history.

Maggie Haberman

I have always been interested in politics and through this class, I have spent more time trying to understand how complicated it is in the White House. My mom suggested I look into Maggie Haberman’s work as reads a lot of the White House correspondent’s work, and her writing is very knowledgeable. She does a good job of not just focusing about Trump in her writing and including other crucial people in politics too. She writes a fair amount (individual pieces and co-written pieces) and does well at keeping her readers up to date with Trump’s actions in office.

Bio: “Maggie Haberman is a White House correspondent who joined The Times in 2015 and was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for reporting on Donald Trump’s advisers and their connections to Russia. Before joining The Times as a campaign correspondent, Ms. Haberman worked as a political reporter at Politico, from 2010 to 2015. She previously worked at other publications, including The New York Post and The New York Daily News. She was a finalist for the Mirror Awards, with Glenn Thrush, for the 2014 profile “What Is Hillary Clinton Afraid Of?”
