Burns Story 2 Idea
I’d like to write a localization about the opioid crisis in the US. This is something that is wreaking havoc all over the country but gets relatively little coverage, and gets pushed aside for other news. In light of the recent scandal with Purdue Pharma and the lawsuit against it, I think this could make an interesting story. It is a potential that Wake students do not know much and are not directly affected by the crisis, but I hope to find some students who are well informed. This is a big issue on the Cherokee Reservation close to my hometown, so I hope to learn more about how the crisis affects individuals and communities in my research even if that does not necessarily come out in the story. This story is one that gets swept aside, whether intentionally or not, so I am interested to see what students know or do not know about it.

Burns Story Idea
I would like to report on the climate strike that I attended last Friday. I think that this is an important event not only on campus here at Wake but around the world. I live in the Sustainability House with one of the students who organized the event, so I watched it unfold first as a plan but then watched it come into fruition, and I saw hard hard the student worked to make the event happen. I want to write about this story not only because many of my friends were involved, but also because I think that climate issues are of utmost importance and this demonstration potentially made waves in the Wake community. It is newsworthy because not only was it a unique event on Wake’s campus, but it was also just one of thousands of similar strikes all over the world.
Burns– NY Times Reporter Lisa Friedman
I have chosen Lisa Friedman as the reporter that I’ll follow for this class. Friedman is a writer at the climate desk and writes frequently about environmental policy. She’s covered multiple international climate talks and has previous work experience with climate writing before coming to the Times. I chose Friedman because I too am interested in climate and policy writing. I want to learn what good environmental reporting looks like outside of the realm of conservation advocacy. Additionally, I like the fact that Friedman chooses to focus on policy.
