I chose to follow the news reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones, who reports on racial injustice for the New York Times. I specifically chose this reporter because she is a woman of color, reporting on topics that are relevant to viewing the progression of American society in the fight for justice for all. Her previous articles have dealt with federal failures to enforce the Fair Housing Act, the resegregation of American schools and policing in America. By reading about racial injustice, I can learn how our government system is actively affecting people of color in more ways than just the things that are shown on the nightly news.
I find pleasure in Hannah – Jones work because she is actively exposing the injustices that are masked daily from the public eye. Personally, I admire her because she is a working woman. Hannah-Jones is also, a wife and mother to one daughter. She actually wrote a piece about her daughter, titled, “Choosing a School for my Daughter in a Segregated City”. I appreciate the direct ties, which her writing shares to my life, her own life, and others as well.
