2020 Election: What Matters to Wake

Climate. Healthcare. Military. Social programs. Women’s rights. Gun control. Impeachment. These are issues Wake Forest students are paying attention to for the 2020 presidential race.

But, with myriad democratic candidates to choose from, students simply feel like they don’t have the time to keep up.

“I like to stay informed,” said junior Caleb Saguil, but as to following the election closely: “not really.”

When asked the same question about following the race, three other students responded the same way: “not really.”

With 17 candidates running for the prized Democratic nomination, the news can seem like nothing more than overstimulating for university students.

When it comes to the big race, “I’m a democrat, so whichever candidate {democrats} elect,” will get senior Carson Markland’s vote.

“Women’s rights, social issues, and equality all matter to me,” she said.

Sophomore Anna Prusko has a similar perspective.

“Social rights, abortion, and gun control all matter to me,” said Prusko.

Wake’s Senator of the House Miles Middleton named Joe Biden as his favorite candidate.

As a member of ROTC, “military, regulating troops and consolidating troops” all matter most to Middleton.

Another senior, Chris Haggerty, said Elizabeth Warren was his favorite candidate and climate change was one of the most important issues for him.

As for impeachment, “I’m totally against it,” said Middleton.

“It seems blown out of proportion,” added Markland.

Mackey Story Idea #3

I’d like to write about the heating and cooling systems in place and how they are distributed on campus. I would like to discuss on how the use of chilled water and the heating plant play a role in the University’s energy consumption and efficiency. I think it would be interesting to find out how the systems compare to Winston-Salem as a whole.

For sources, Deedee Johnston suggested that I speak with Jimmy Nifong who teaches at the Tunnel Tours. I plan to interview a few students and someone from the Office of Sustainability to see what their understanding of these systems and energy consumption is. I also want to visit the heating plant if possible.

Mackey Story Idea #2

I want to write a localization story about the vaping epidemic and how it relates to students on our campus. There have been several stories written recently about vaping-related lung illnesses and deaths. The federal government has also been discussing taking action against the e-cigarette industry.

I think this is a timely story because many college students at Wake and across the United States own e-cigarette and vaping products. Texas A&M recently issued a vaping ban on their campus and other campuses could potentially follow their lead.

Some of the potential sources I am planning to interview are students who do and don’t own/use vape products. I want to know the reasons why they are for or against vaping. I would also like to interview some of the people who work for the Office of Wellbeing on campus and see if they feel Wake should take any further action on vaping.

Mackey Story Idea #1

For my first story I am going to report on Hit the Bricks happening on Thursday, September 26. The event is held yearly on campus to help raise funds for cancer research. I want to cover the history of how the event began, how it turned into such a big event at Wake Forest, and why students like to participate. I plan to participate myself and interview other students and faculty who are at the event. I want to cover this event because many people, myself included, have been affected by cancer in some way.

Mackey NYT Reporter Marc Stein

The reporter I decided to follow this semester is Marc Stein. He is a sports reporter for The New York Times specializing in coverage of the N.B.A., and occasionally soccer and tennis. He is a graduate of Cal State Fullerton and has covered the N.B.A. since February 1994. Stein came to The Times after nearly 15 years at ESPN.

I chose to follow Marc Stein because he is a very reliable source for N.B.A. breaking news. He is very active on Twitter so it is very easy to know when he posts a new story. I like how his articles are very factual and he uses a lot of direct quotes from players. Also, if I do pursue a career in journalism, I am very interested in covering sports.
