Gregory Story 3 Idea

I’m going to write about the Peru summer program here at Wake, and, more specifically, the work that goes on in the course and how it both deals with/battles climate change and reflects Wake’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. To narrow the article’s focus, I’d like to really focus on the students’ perspectives on how their work in Peru has affected their career trajectory/attitudes towards climate change/attitudes towards Wake’s sustainability efforts.

I have a list of students to interview, all of whom I have contacted and about 90% of whom have replied and been willing to help out. Additionally, I’d like to try and interview Dr. Silman and potentially Professor Catanoso if I need some additional information on the program.

Gregory Story 2 Idea

I’d like to write a localization about the recent panic surrounding vaping and e-cigarettes. As soon as a report regarding vaping deaths was published about a month ago, the issue became incredibly divisive. Some question the validity of the reports and specifically their pertinence to the Juul vs. black market vaping products (and whether or not the two are being conflated with one another), while others had a clear “it’s about time” attitude. Finally, it’s no secret that at wake, people use vaping products and e-cigarettes. I want to take advantage of this topic while it’s still hot.

Potential Sources:

  • students (vaping students and non-vaping students)
  • faculty (whether or not they notice the issue)
  • staff
  • student health (hopefully with a doc/nurse)
  • gas station employee (how many students buy)

Gregory Story 1 Idea

For my first story, I’ll be covering a talk on Tuesday evening by Kenneth Price, co-director of the Walt Whitman archive. It will be held in the ZSR 4th floor auditorium at 4 P.M. I chose this particular event because I find the overarching topic of the potential issues of digital archives to be quite interesting, especially being someone who must use them frequently. Additionally, as an English major, I’ve had quite a lot of exposure to Whitman, so the subject matter itself is interesting. In terms of a broader audience, digital archives are crucial to students everywhere, so to hear about the complexity of keeping such sites alive and posing new questions as to the collaborative nature of an author’s work is entirely relevant to any curriculum.

Peter Baker

From the NY Times Website:

“Peter Baker is the chief White House correspondent for The New York Times, responsible for covering President Trump, the fourth president he has covered. He covered President Obama for The Times and Bill Clinton and George W. Bush for The Washington Post.”

I decided to follow Peter Baker because I believe he does a great job of capturing the current political and social climate in his coverage of the White House. His language is at once formal and disarming, allowing for a somewhat humorous reading of the chaos we inevitably wake up to each morning.
